# Multimedia elements in texts

## Ready when they can

- Explain how illustrations in a graphic novel convey emotion or advance the story
- Analyse how visual elements such as colour and layout affect the tone of a multimedia text
- Compare how the same scene is portrayed in text versus in visual or audio format

## Lesson: How pictures and layout tell the story

You already know that pictures and words work together in a book. Now look closer: it is not just WHAT is drawn that matters, but HOW it is drawn. The colours, the shapes, and the way pictures are arranged on the page all carry meaning.

**Example.** Picture a graphic novel page where a character is scared. The artist might use dark, shadowy colours and draw the character's face very close up. If the same page used bright yellow and a small, distant drawing, the scene would feel completely different, even with the same words.

*(drawing: Layout matters too. A fight scene chopped into six tiny panels feels fast and jumpy, like quick punches. The same fight drawn as one big panel feels slower and more dramatic, like a single frozen moment.)*

**Example.** A sad goodbye can appear in a plain novel, a graphic novel, and a movie. The novel uses careful word choice. The graphic novel might use grey colours and a character's slumped shoulders. The movie might use quiet music and a slow camera. Same scene, three different tools for the same feeling.

Movies and audio stories have mood tools of their own. Music, sound effects, and the speed of a voice can change how a scene feels. Slow, soft music can make pictures feel calm or sad, while fast, loud drums can make the very same pictures feel full of danger.

Not every picture in a book is about feelings. In nonfiction, a labeled diagram can show how the parts of something fit together, like the inside of a volcano. One clear diagram can show at a glance what a whole paragraph struggles to explain.

**Tip.** When you read a graphic novel, pause on a page and ask yourself: what do the colours and layout make me feel, not just what is happening in the words?

**Recap.** In graphic novels and illustrated books, colour, layout, and panel size are not decoration. They shape the mood and meaning just as much as the words do.
