# Paragraph Shape and Deliberate Breaks

Decide where paragraphs start and stop for effect: one movement per paragraph, a break placed to shift time, focus, or speaker, and the one-line paragraph kept rare.

## Ready when they can

- Split an overlong paragraph at the point where its focus changes
- Use a very short paragraph once in a piece and justify where it sits
- Open a paragraph with a sentence that moves the piece on rather than repeating the last one

## Lesson: Break where the writing turns

Give each paragraph one movement and break where the writing turns. A new speaker always starts a new paragraph, even for a single interrupted syllable. Readers read the white space at the left margin as a signal to switch voices.

**Example.** Open with one clear sentence that shifts focus to your target, like introducing the tallest person you ever saw before describing anything else. Then spend the paragraph on the most striking part first, the detail that hits hardest on first sight. One hook, then the strongest feature.

Split any overlong paragraph at the exact point its focus changes. Save the one-line paragraph for a single rare moment and be ready to justify its seat. Every opener should move the piece forward, never just echo the last paragraph.

**Tip.** When dialogue tangles, check that no paragraph holds two speakers. If two voices share one block, readers stall working out who said what. Splitting keeps the back-and-forth flowing like real talk.
