## Ready when they can

- Trace how a character's attitude changes across a story and identify the turning points
- Explain how a specific incident in a drama propels the action or provokes a decision
- Analyse how the setting influences a character's behaviour or the mood of a scene

## Lesson: Plot, Turning Points, and Character Change

Every story moves through a chain of connected events, not just one big moment. Something happens, a character reacts, and that reaction leads to the next event. This chain is the plot structure. As you read, watch how these events push characters to face problems, make choices, and often come out changed by the end.

*(drawing: In this plot arc, the highlighted step is the turning point, the moment a character can't go back to how things were.)*

**Example.** Priya gets picked last for the team every week and stays quiet, avoiding eye contact (the start). One day the coach is out sick, and a new player asks Priya for help with a drill (an incident). Priya hesitates, then explains the drill clearly (the turning point). Her teammates notice she knows the game well, and she starts speaking up in practice (the change). By the final match, she's calling out plays with confidence (the end). Notice how one incident, being asked for help, is what pushes Priya to change.

**Tip.** Setting matters too. A character who feels brave in a crowded, sunlit gym might feel small and unsure alone in a quiet hallway. As you read, notice how a change in place or time can shift a character's mood or choices, not just the events around them.

Setting is where and when a story happens, and it does more than fill the background. A change of place or time can shift a character's mood and choices: a kid who jokes easily in a sunny park might go quiet in a cold, dark barn. Writers pick settings on purpose, so when a scene moves somewhere new, ask what the new place makes easier or harder, and which choice it nudges the character toward.

**Recap.** Plot events lead characters to turning points that change them, and the setting around those moments shapes how they think, feel, and act.
