## Ready when they can

- Read assigned material and prepare three discussion points or questions before a group conversation
- During discussion, refer explicitly to the text or preparation notes to support a point
- After a group exchange, explain how one's own thinking changed or was confirmed by others' contributions

## Lesson: Getting Ready to Talk

Remember how Leo built on Priya's idea about the class pet? He was ready because he had already thought it through. Good thinkers get ready before a discussion too: read what you need, think about it, and pick three points or questions, so you always have something to say.

*(drawing: Four steps get you ready before a discussion starts.)*

**Example.** Before discussing a story about weather, Priya reads it twice and writes three points: why clouds form, why rain falls, and a question about snow. During the discussion, she says, 'In the text it said clouds form when warm air rises,' and points to her notes. After the talk she says how the talk changed her thinking or made it stronger.

**Tip.** Use your notes to back up what you say while the group is talking. Afterward, think about whether the discussion changed your mind or matched what you already thought, and say so out loud.

**Recap.** Read, jot three points, use your notes to explain during the discussion, and say afterward if your thinking changed or held steady.
