# Pronoun Case and Reference

Use pronouns in the proper case (subjective, objective, possessive) and use intensive pronouns like 'myself'; recognise and correct shifts in pronoun number and person, and vague pronouns whose antecedent is unclear

## Ready when they can

- Choose the correct pronoun case in tricky spots (e.g. 'between you and me', not 'between you and I')
- Fix a shift in person or number mid-sentence (e.g. rewriting 'If a student works hard, you will improve')
- Rewrite a sentence with a vague pronoun so the reference is clear (e.g. 'Ana told Mia that Mia's essay had won')

## Lesson: Pronouns: Right Case, Clear Reference

Picking the right pronoun helps readers follow who did what. Pronouns change form depending on their job in a sentence. Use the subjective case (I, he, she, we, they) when the pronoun is doing the action. Use the objective case (me, him, her, us, them) when the pronoun is receiving the action or follows a word like to, for, with, or between. That is why 'between you and me' is correct, not 'between you and I': after a preposition, pronouns switch to the objective case.

*(drawing: She does the action, so it takes the subjective case. After a word like 'to,' the pronoun switches to the objective case: him.)*

**Example.** Test it by dropping the other person. 'Mia and me went to the store' becomes 'Me went to the store,' which sounds wrong. Drop 'Mia and' from the correct version instead: 'I went to the store' sounds right. So the full sentence is 'Mia and I went to the store.'

Intensive pronouns, like myself, himself, and themselves, add emphasis to a noun or pronoun already in the sentence. 'I built the shed myself' means I did it alone, with no help. Intensive pronouns are extra: the sentence still makes sense without them. Do not use myself as the subject or object on its own, as in 'Myself finished the race.'

Watch for shifts in person or number partway through a sentence. 'If a student works hard, you will improve' starts with 'a student' (third person) then jumps to 'you' (second person). Fix it by staying in one person the whole way: 'If a student works hard, they will improve,' or 'If you work hard, you will improve.'

**Example.** Sam met his brother, and 'he was happy' could mean Sam felt happy or the brother did. Since a pronoun should point to exactly one clear person, swap in a name: 'When Sam met his brother, Sam was happy,' or 'When Sam met his brother, his brother was happy.'

**Recap.** Match pronoun case to the job it does, keep person and number consistent, and swap in a name whenever a pronoun could point to more than one person.
