# Proofreading Under Time Pressure

Find your own errors in the minutes left at the end, not the ones a reader would find in a week. Know which mistakes you personally make, look for those first, and read in the way that exposes them rather than in the way that reads smoothly past them.

## Ready when they can

- Keep a short list of the errors they make repeatedly and check for those first
- Read a draft in a way that breaks the flow, backwards by sentence or aloud, and catch what silent reading missed
- Correct spelling, apostrophes and sentence boundaries in a timed piece without rewriting whole sentences

## Lesson: Catching your own errors in minutes

With minutes left, hunt your own greatest hits first. Keep a short list of the errors you make again and again, and check for those before anything else. Your personal list beats any general checklist.

Never proofread by reading smoothly from the top. Read backwards one sentence at a time, or read the whole piece aloud. Breaking the flow shows what sits on the page instead of what you meant to write.

Give every sentence a quick trial. Each one needs its own subject and verb that agree, so ask who is doing what. If you cannot answer fast, split the tangle. Then circle each comma and check it earns its place around extra detail.

**Tip.** Watch the tiny marks. An apostrophe shows possession or a missing letter, and mixing it up is a classic timed slip. A spelling checker catches many slips but misses wrong-word errors, so always read the piece yourself.
