## Ready when they can

- Recite a poem from memory with expression and clear enunciation
- Add a drawing or visual display to support an oral description or presentation
- Present information to the class using complete sentences and audible voice

## Lesson: Reciting Poetry

Reciting a poem means saying it out loud from memory, not reading it off a page. You learn the words so well that they live in your head, then you say them like you mean them.

*(drawing: Read the poem many times, then try saying it without looking, until you can say it loud and clear.)*

**Example.** Priya learns a poem about the moon. She reads it every night, then covers the words and tries to say it from memory. On the day of her class presentation, she speaks up loudly and slows her voice down for the last line, so it sounds calm and magical.

**Tip.** Let your voice match the feeling of the words. Say happy lines brightly, quiet lines softly, and exciting lines with more energy. A small drawing next to you can also help your class picture what the poem is about.

**Recap.** Learn the poem by heart, then use your voice and maybe a picture to bring it to life for your class.
