## Ready when they can

- Recommend a book to a peer by explaining its genre, theme, and what makes it engaging, comparing it to other books the peer has enjoyed
- Justify a book recommendation by referring to specific features such as the author's style, the plot structure, or how a theme is developed
- Maintain a reading log or book review collection that captures key responses to books read and serves as a reference for future recommendations

## Lesson: Recommending books you love

A good book recommendation is more than 'you should read this.' Tell your friend the genre, like mystery or adventure. Share the theme, the big idea behind the story. Explain what makes it exciting to read.

*(drawing: A strong recommendation has three parts: the genre, the theme, and what makes the book fun to read.)*

Before you pick, find out what the reader likes. Ask what the last book they loved was, and what they liked about it. Ask what made them stop reading something partway, so you know what to steer around. Ask how much reading they want, because a long book packed with hard words does not suit every reader. Their answers might not match your own taste at all, and that is fine: the book is for them.

**Example.** Maya loved a fantasy book about a hidden kingdom. She tells her friend Sam, 'You liked the adventure story with the brave girl last month. This one has a similar hero, but the kingdom is underwater. The author builds suspense slowly, just like your favorite author does.'

You can back up your recommendation with real details. Point to how the author writes, whether the plot builds slowly or jumps right into action, or how a theme like friendship grows stronger as the story continues. A reason does its job when it names something in the book and links it to something the reader already enjoys.

Tell enough to make someone curious, then stop. You can name the genre, the trouble the main character is in, and one detail you loved. Leave the ending alone. If you give away the surprise, your friend has nothing left to find out.

A recommendation is only as good as what you can still remember. Details fade fast, so keep a reading log: after you finish a book, write down the title, the genre, a few thoughts and a rating. Months later that log is what lets you name the theme and the one detail you loved, instead of falling back on 'it was good'. Writing it takes a minute, and the recall lasts for years.

**Recap.** Ask what your friend likes first. Then name the genre and theme, give real reasons that match them, and stop before you give away the ending.
