# Revising and editing (age 7+)

Evaluate and edit writing by assessing effectiveness, proposing changes to grammar and vocabulary for consistency, and proof-reading for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors at Y3-4 level

Subject: English · Area: Writing Composition · Ages 7 to 11
Page: https://lightmysky.com/learn/english/revising-and-editing-age-7-mt_pis4novXWQ

## Ready when they can

- Read own or a peer's writing aloud and suggest specific improvements to vocabulary or sentence structure
- Propose changes to grammar and word choice to improve clarity and consistency across a piece of writing
- Proof-read writing at Y3-4 level for spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors and correct them independently

## Lesson: Revise and edit like a writer

Writing is never finished after the first try. Revising means going back to change words and sentences so your ideas come across clearly. Editing means fixing small mistakes, like spelling and punctuation, so nothing confuses the reader.

*(drawing: Follow these steps each time you go back to a piece of writing.)*

**Example.** Zara wrote: 'The dog runned fast and it was nice.' She read it aloud and heard the mistakes. She changed it to: 'The dog ran fast and looked playful.' Now the tense is correct and the word choice is clearer.

**Tip.** When you proofread, cover the rest of the page and look at one sentence at a time. It is much easier to spot mistakes when you are not rushing ahead to the next line.

**Recap.** Revise for clearer words and consistent tense, then proofread slowly to catch spelling and punctuation mistakes.
