# Revising and editing (age 8+)

Read back your own writing critically and independently — notice where meaning is unclear, where a word could be stronger, or where the reader might be confused; make revisions without needing teacher prompts, using your own judgment about what is and isn't working

Subject: English · Area: Writing Composition · Ages 8 to 9

## Ready when they can

- Reread a paragraph silently and independently identify at least one place where meaning could be clearer or a word choice improved
- Make a revision that goes beyond spelling/punctuation — changing a sentence for clarity or effect
- Explain in their own words why they changed something ('I thought the reader wouldn't understand what I meant')

## Lesson: Being Your Own First Reader

You've learned how to listen when someone else gives you feedback on your writing. Revising and editing means doing that job yourself, before anyone else reads it. Read your writing back slowly, as if you were a stranger seeing it for the first time.

**Example.** Mia wrote: 'The trip was fun. We saw stuff and it was cool.' Reading it back, she noticed 'stuff' and 'cool' didn't tell the reader much. She changed it to: 'The trip was fun. We saw dolphins jumping near the boat, and it was the best part of my day.'

*(drawing: Mia read her sentence back and swapped 'stuff' for words the reader can picture.)*

Look for three things: a sentence that's confusing, a word that's too plain, and a spot where the reader might think 'wait, what?' You don't need anyone to point these out. Trust your own judgment.

**Tip.** Read your writing out loud, or hear it like a voice in your head. If a sentence sounds strange or confusing when you 'hear' it, that's your sign to fix it.

**Recap.** Read your own writing like a stranger would, and fix what doesn't work before anyone else sees it.
