# Revising at Length

Revise a long piece by diagnosis: read for the argument first, move or cut whole sections, and leave the sentence work until the shape has settled.

## Ready when they can

- Summarise your own draft in one paragraph and find where the draft does not match the summary
- Move or delete a whole section and repair the joins it leaves
- Hold back line editing until the structural pass is done, and say why

## Lesson: Fix the shape before the sentences

Start revision with the big picture, not the commas. Write a one paragraph summary of what your draft actually says, then check each section against it. Any part that fights the summary has to move, shrink, or go. This slow check is the only way a long piece ends up saying one clear thing.

**Example.** Move or cut whole blocks, then repair the joins. Keep your outline beside you, because shifting two outline lines beats rewriting two pages. After a move, read the join aloud. If the jump sounds abrupt, add a bridge sentence so it reads smoothly.

**Tip.** Work in passes and save sentences for last. Settle the structure first, then the paragraphs, and only then the spelling and commas. Line edits get wasted on text you later cut, so hold them back and say why: shape first, polish last.

**Recap.** Summarize, reshape whole sections and mend the joins, and polish sentences only once the structure holds.
