## Ready when they can

- Write CVC words from dictation (e.g. 'cat', 'bed', 'hot')
- Segment words into individual sounds before choosing letters to write
- Spell simple words phonetically drawing on sound-letter knowledge

## Lesson: Segmenting words into sounds

Every word you say is made of sounds. Say a word slowly, and you can hear each sound so you can write it.

*(drawing: Say cat slowly: /c/ /a/ /t/. Each box is one sound.)*

**Example.** Mia wants to write hot. She says it slowly: /h/ /o/ /t/. She writes h, then o, then t.

Some sounds need two letters, like sh in ship. Say the sound, then pick the letters that match it.

**Recap.** Say the word slowly, then write letters to match each sound.
