## Ready when they can

- Write a short story with at least three sequenced sentences
- Use time words like 'first', 'then', 'next' to order events
- Include a reaction or ending to a narrative (e.g. 'I felt happy')

## Lesson: Simple Stories with Beginning and Ending

A good story has a beginning, a middle, and an ending. First, something starts. Then, something happens next. Last, the story ends and someone feels something.

*(drawing: These words tell your reader what happens first, next, and last.)*

**Example.** Mia went outside to play. First, she found a red leaf. Then, she found a yellow leaf. Last, she smiled and felt happy.

**Tip.** Say your story out loud before you write it. Use first, then, and last to keep events in order. Don't forget to share how you felt at the end.

**Recap.** Tell what happened first, then, and last. Then share how you felt.
