## Ready when they can

- Group words or objects by category (e.g. animals, foods, colours)
- Identify and produce opposite pairs (e.g. 'big/small', 'hot/cold', 'go/stop')
- Explain why items belong together in a category

## Lesson: Sorting words and finding opposites

Words can go into groups. Animals are one group. Fruits are another group.

*(drawing: Dog, cat, fish, and bird are all animals. They belong together.)*

**Example.** Zoe sees an apple and a carrot. Apple is a fruit. Carrot is a vegetable. They go in different groups.

**Tip.** To sort words, ask: what do these things have in common?

*(drawing: Hot and cold are opposites. They feel completely different.)*

**Recap.** Group words that go together. Opposites are totally different from each other.
