## Ready when they can

- Leave clear finger-spaces between words when writing
- Count the number of words in a written sentence by identifying spaces
- Correct writing that has missing spaces between words

## Lesson: Spaces between words

A space is a small gap between words. Keep each word's letters together. Leave one clear space before the next word. When writing, put a finger after the word you have finished. Start the next word after that gap.

Point to each whole word and count it once. 'We can all play in the sand.' has seven words. The dot is not another word. With one space between each pair, seven words have six spaces between them. Count these spaces, then add one to find the number of words.

To fix joined words, say the message and find its words. 'Welike jam' becomes 'We like jam'. Add a space between We and like. Keep the space already before jam. Check every joined pair. Count the spaces you add to find how many were missing. To count the words, separate them first, then point to each word once.

**Recap.** A space keeps each word separate so readers can tell them apart.
