## Ready when they can

- Write a dictated sentence using phonically plausible spellings
- Include correct spelling of taught exception words in dictation
- Apply sentence punctuation in dictated writing

## Lesson: Writing What You Hear

Dictation means someone reads a sentence to you. You write it down by yourself. You use the sounds you know to spell each word.

**Example.** The teacher says, 'The dog ran.' You think of the word dog. You break it into sounds: d-o-g. You write a letter for each sound. Then you finish the sentence with a full stop.

*(drawing: Said is a tricky word. Sounding it out gives the wrong spelling. Remember it letter by letter.)*

**Tip.** Say the whole sentence first. Then say each word in sounds before you write it.

**Tip.** Start every sentence with a capital letter. End it with a full stop, question mark, or exclamation mark.

**Recap.** Sound out each word you can, and remember the tricky ones. Start with a capital letter and end with the right mark.
