# Suffixes (age 9+)

Spell words with Latin and French suffix patterns: endings sounding like /ʃəs/ spelt -cious or -tious (e.g., precious, cautious), /ʃəl/ spelt -cial or -tial (e.g., official, essential), and words ending in -ant/-ance/-ancy vs -ent/-ence/-ency (e.g., observant/observance, confident/confidence)

## Ready when they can

- Spell learned -cious words and use related -tion words to remember -tious, as in caution/cautious and ambition/ambitious; recognise that sound alone does not decide the spelling
- Use the usual written-letter pattern for -cial after a vowel letter and -tial after a consonant letter, while checking exceptions
- Spell -ant/-ance/-ancy and -ent/-ence/-ency word families, using learned spellings and related words rather than treating hard or soft c and g as a deciding rule

## Lesson: Suffixes -cious, -tious, -cial, -tial, -ant, -ent

Some endings sound like shus. Learn -cious in spacious, precious, gracious, delicious, ferocious, suspicious and vicious. Related words can help with -tious: caution/cautious, ambition/ambitious and nutrition/nutritious. Keep the t in those pairs. Sound alone cannot choose between -cious and -tious.

*(drawing: Compare the letters in each family. The t stays in both words.)*

The shul sound can be spelt -cial or -tial. Usually, -cial follows a vowel letter: official, special, social and crucial. This is about written letters, not vowel sounds. There are exceptions, such as financial, which has n before -cial. Check a dictionary when the pattern does not settle a spelling.

Usually, -tial follows a consonant letter: essential, partial, potential and confidential. Sam is checking an official safety note: 'Be cautious. Stay observant. This route is essential.' He checks each word's letters, not just its sound.

You cannot reliably hear whether an ending needs a or e. Learn innocent, recent and decent with -ent, and elegant with -ant. Soft c and hard g are clues in these examples, not rules for every word. Related spellings help: observant/observance, confident/confidence and excellent/excellence.

Keep the ending vowel in these families: important/importance and different/difference. Some related nouns end in -ancy or -ency: vacant/vacancy and frequent/frequency. Compare both the vowel and the rest of the ending when you check a pair.

Check a word family against a spelling you know, not another guess. Learn tolerant/tolerance and hesitant/hesitancy. Both families keep a. If neither spelling is familiar, use a dictionary. Anxious has its own spelling with -ious; do not force every similar-sounding word into -cious or -tious.

**Recap.** Learn each ending's letters. Related words can help, and -cial/-tial have usual letter patterns, but sound alone does not settle every spelling.
