## Lesson: Keeping one narrator's voice

Pick your narrator and stay behind their eyes from the first page to the last. Every sentence should sound filtered through their outlook, not yours. Never report what a distant mind thinks.

Keep their word choices steady. If a word feels too fancy for how they talk or think, swap it for one that fits them. Hold the same formal or casual level throughout, so the voice reads as one person.

Let the narrator betray what they do not grasp. Show it through what they say and notice instead of announcing it. A narrator who keeps excusing someone cruel, without seeing the pattern, tells readers more than they know.

**Tip.** Hunt the line where your own voice has replaced theirs and repair it. Readers feel the slip even when they cannot name it, so check each paragraph against the voice you chose.
