# Themes and messages

Identify recurring themes (good vs evil, friendship, bravery) and conventions (once upon a time, moral at the end, hero's journey) across a wide range of books including fairy stories, myths, legends and traditional tales

## Ready when they can

- Identify a common theme across two different stories (e.g., 'Both "Jack and the Beanstalk" and "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" are about bravery overcoming a threat')
- Name literary conventions found in fairy tales and myths (e.g., 'once upon a time', magical numbers like three, a quest or journey, good triumphing over evil)
- Explain how the same theme can appear in different genres (e.g., friendship in a realistic story vs a myth)

## Lesson: Spotting themes across stories

A theme is the big idea hiding inside a story. It is not what happens, it is what the story is really about, like bravery, friendship, or good beating evil. Once you know a theme, you can find it hiding inside many different stories.

A story almost never writes its theme down for you, so you work it out from clues. Ask what the main character does, what goes wrong, and what changes by the end. Then say the big idea in one short sentence, like 'friends help each other feel brave.' A word on its own, like 'dogs', only tells you what the story is about, so it is not a theme yet. Check that your idea fits the whole story, not just one part of it.

Fairy tales, myths, and legends also share tricks writers use again and again. These tricks are called conventions. A story might start with 'once upon a time,' use the number three again and again, send the hero on a journey, and end with good winning and a moral, a lesson the story teaches.

*(drawing: Many fairy tales follow this same pattern, no matter who the characters are.)*

**Example.** Jack and the Beanstalk and The Three Billy Goats Gruff look nothing alike. One has a boy and a giant, the other has goats and a troll. But both stories share the same theme: bravery overcoming a threat. Each hero faces something scary and does not run away.

**Tip.** When you finish a story, ask yourself: what did the hero learn or overcome? That question usually points straight at the theme.

**Recap.** Different stories can hide the same theme and follow the same pattern, so look past the characters to find them.
