## Ready when they can

- Identify a theme in a novel and explain how specific events develop it across the plot
- Distinguish between the topic of a text (what it is about) and the theme (what it is saying)
- Write a concise, objective summary of a chapter or article without inserting personal opinion

## Lesson: Tracing a Theme Through a Story

A topic names a text's subject, such as friendship. A theme statement explains what a story suggests about that subject. Readers may use a short theme label, such as loyalty, but the label alone does not explain the message. State the message as a full idea and check it against the events.

*(drawing: Trace the change across the story, rather than choosing a message from one isolated moment.)*

**Example.** A girl fears trying out for a soccer team. A friend helps her practise. She tries out and feels proud before hearing the result. One supported theme is that support can help people act despite fear. Explain what each event adds: fear establishes the problem, practice provides support, and trying out shows change. Select relevant details, compare possible themes, or test whether planned events would support a theme.

An objective summary keeps the main events, problem and outcome in your own words. Remove your added praise, blame and advice. Keep relevant feelings or opinions the text attributes to a character. If a sentence mixes an event with your judgment, remove only the judgment. Check every claim against the passage. A summary must stay short without changing the outcome.

In non-fiction, the central idea is the main point developed about a topic. Find it by connecting the main points across sections. An article might explain that lunch queues keep pupils from visiting a library, then propose longer opening hours. Its central idea is that changed hours could improve access. Supporting details explain the problem or proposal; they do not prove the proposal has already worked.

**Recap.** State a supported theme or central idea, explain how relevant details develop it, and summarise without adding your own judgments.
