## Ready when they can

- Explain how a director's staging choices (e.g., set, lighting, blocking) affect the audience's understanding
- Compare two productions or adaptations of the same play and evaluate different interpretive choices
- Analyse how a filmed or live production stays faithful to or departs from the original script

## Lesson: How a Play Comes Alive on Stage

A playwright writes the words of a play, but those words are only half the story. Every time a play is performed, a director and a team of actors and designers decide how to bring those words to life on stage or screen.

The director makes staging choices: where the set is placed, how bright or dark the lighting is, and where each actor stands or moves, which is called blocking. These choices shape how you understand a scene, even though the script hasn't changed at all.

**Example.** Imagine a character who just learned terrible news. One director lights the stage with cold blue light and leaves the character alone in an empty room. Another director uses warm light and fills the stage with worried friends. The words are the same, but the first choice feels lonely and frightening, while the second feels supported.

*(drawing: Same words, two stages. On the left, the actor stands alone in the cold, empty room. On the right, worried friends crowd in close. The words never changed, but the feeling did.)*

Actors make choices too. An actor decides how to say each line: loud or quiet, fast or slow, warm or cold. Gestures and facial expressions are choices as well. Two actors can say the very same line and make it feel completely different, because each actor has decided something different about the character.

**Tip.** When you watch a play or its film version, notice what the director added or changed. An actor's tone of voice, a dim spotlight, or a crowded stage are all clues about how that production wants you to feel.

**Recap.** The script stays the same, but a director's staging and an actor's choices shape how each performance makes you feel.
