- Track words with a finger moving left to right across the page
- Turn pages in the correct sequence when handling a book
- Point to where reading starts on a page

## Lesson: Understanding print on a page

Print is not just marks on paper. It tells a story or gives facts. Your eyes read words in one direction. Start at the top-left. Move your eyes right, then down. You read one word at a time, in order.

*(drawing: Start at the first word. Read left to right, one by one.)*

**Example.** Mia opens her book. She puts her finger on the top-left word. She moves it slowly to the right as she reads. The finger shows her eyes which word to read next.

A book is read page by page. The story starts at the front of the book. When you finish a page, turn it to see the next one. The pages come in order, and that order makes the story make sense.

**Tip.** Turn the pages in order, from front to back. Skipping pages makes the story confusing.

**Recap.** Print carries meaning. Read left to right, top to bottom, page by page.
