## Ready when they can

- Choose books independently that offer appropriate challenge and genuine interest
- Read at least two Shakespeare plays and a range of pre-1914 and contemporary literature during KS3
- Maintain a personal reading record and articulate preferences with reasons

## Lesson: Reading widely across genres

Reading widely means picking many different kinds of books, not just the same genre every time. One month you might read a mystery, then a play, then a non-fiction book about real volcanoes, then a poem. Each genre shows you something a little different about how stories and ideas can be told. Pick books that stretch you a little, not only easy ones.

*(drawing: This reader picked four different kinds of books this term: fiction, poetry, a play, and non-fiction. That is reading widely.)*

**Example.** Priya read a spy thriller, then a book of poems, then Romeo and Juliet for the first time, then finished with a non-fiction book about the ocean. After each one, she wrote a line in her reading record about what she liked or didn't, so she remembers why and picks better next time. Counting the kinds shows if she is reading widely.

**Tip.** If you always reach for the same genre, ask a librarian or a friend for something completely different.

Wide reading also stretches across time and place. Try an older book, like a Shakespeare play, next to a new one to see how stories and language have changed. Books from other countries and cultures show you the world through different eyes. In England, the KS3 plan asks for at least two Shakespeare plays, plus pre-1914 and new writing.

**Recap.** Wide reading means trying fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and plays from different times and places, and keeping track of what you liked and why.
