## Ready when they can

- Generate at least 4 words in a word family from a given root (e.g., from 'play': player, playful, replay, playground)
- Explain how members of a word family are connected in meaning (e.g., 'solve, solution, dissolve all relate to finding answers or breaking apart')
- Use knowledge of a word family to predict the meaning of an unfamiliar member (e.g., knowing 'act' helps understand 'actor', 'action', 'react')

## Lesson: Word Families and Root Words

Many words grow from the same root, the way branches grow from one tree trunk. Spot the root, and you can find its whole word family.

*(drawing: The root "play" grows into player, playful, replay, and playground.)*

**Example.** Look at the root "solve." It gives us solve, solution, solver, dissolve, and insoluble. Every one of these words connects back to finding an answer or breaking something apart.

**Example.** Now try "cycle," a root about wheels or circles. From it come recycle, bicycle, and cyclist. Even if a word is new to you, the root gives you a clue to its meaning.

When you meet a strange word, look inside it for a root you already know. That root is your first clue to what the word means. Then look at the ending, because endings carry meaning too. An -er ending usually names a person who does the thing, so a painter paints. A -ness ending names the state of being it, so sadness is being sad. A -ful ending means full of it, so joyful is full of joy. Root plus ending gets you most of the way to a word you have never met before.

**Recap.** Find the shared root, and you can unlock the meaning of a whole word family.
