# Writing opinions

Compose opinion pieces using drawing, dictating, or writing that name a topic or book and state a preference or opinion about it

Subject: English · Area: Writing Composition · Ages 5 to 7
Page: https://lightmysky.com/learn/english/writing-opinions-mt_91f1XFvGZq

## Ready when they can

- State an opinion clearly (e.g. 'My favourite animal is a dog because...')
- Give at least one reason for an opinion
- Draw, dictate, or write to express a preference about a book or topic

## Lesson: Writing your opinion

An opinion is what you think about something. It tells how you feel, not just facts. You can share your opinion about a book or a game.

*(drawing: Kids picked different favorite fruits. Every opinion can be different, and that is fine.)*

**Example.** Mia picks her favorite book to write about. She says, My favorite book is Dog Man. It makes me laugh a lot. She named the book, gave her opinion, and told why.

**Tip.** Always use the word because to explain why. Say what you are talking about first. Then tell your opinion and your reason.

**Recap.** Name it, say what you think, then tell why with because.
