## Ready when they can

- Write a simple poem using rhyming couplets or a repeated pattern
- Recite a poem from memory with expression and appropriate intonation
- Identify rhyme and rhythm patterns in poems read aloud

## Lesson: Writing Your Own Poems

You already know how to spot rhyming words and say a poem out loud. Now it is your turn to write one. Poems often follow a pattern. The ends of two lines can rhyme, or every line can start the same way.

*(drawing: This poem repeats 'I see a ___' and ends each line with a rhyme: cat, bat, hat.)*

**Example.** Ben wrote a rhyming couplet: 'The moon is round and bright, / It glows up in the night.' Bright and night end with the same sound, so they rhyme.

**Tip.** When you recite your poem, do not use a flat voice. Slow down for the quiet parts, get louder for the exciting parts, and pause where the words tell you to breathe.

**Recap.** A poem can rhyme, repeat a pattern, or both, and reciting it well means using your voice to show how it feels.
