# Writing to a Reader Who Decides

A personal statement, an application, a formal request: writing where the reader has something you want and a stack of other people's pages beside yours. What is left out matters as much as what is claimed, and every claim has to survive being checked.

## Ready when they can

- Write an opening that says something only this writer could say
- Replace an unsupported claim about themselves with the evidence a reader could verify
- Cut a paragraph that flatters the reader instead of answering what was asked

## Lesson: Writing to someone who decides

Your reader holds something you want, a place, a job, or funding. A tall stack of rival pages sits beside yours. Your job is to make choosing you feel safe. Every line should serve that choice.

Open with a line only you could write, tied to one real moment or detail from your life. Back each claim about yourself with proof the reader can check, like a result, a role, or a thing you made. Give one clear example per claim, with numbers where you have them.

**Example.** Compare two lines. Weak: I am a passionate and hardworking person. Strong: I ran the school food bank for a year and grew weekly parcels from 40 to 110. The second line can be checked, so a busy reader trusts it. Pick proof that fits this place.

Cut any paragraph that praises the reader instead of answering what was asked. Read the prompt twice and test each paragraph against it. Keep sentences short, plain, and proofread, since errors tell the reader you do not value their time. When one story serves two readers, answer each exact question with proof picked for that place.
