# Adapting to Environments

How culture shapes the way people adapt to and modify their environments: housing built for heat, cold or floods; irrigation and terracing that make farming possible; clothing and daily rhythms suited to the local climate

## Ready when they can

- Give examples of housing adapted to place (e.g., stilt houses in flood zones, thick-walled houses in hot deserts)
- Explain how people modify land for farming (e.g., terracing hillsides, irrigating dry fields, draining wetlands)
- Link clothing or daily routines to climate (e.g., loose light clothing in desert heat, a midday rest in hot countries)

## Lesson: Homes, Farms, and Clothes That Fit the Land

People do not live the same way everywhere. Where a place is very hot, cold, wet, or dry changes the homes people build, the way they grow food, and even the clothes they wear. Changing how you live to fit the land around you is called adapting.

**Example.** In places that flood often, people build houses on tall wooden stilts, so the floor stays above the water even when a river rises. In hot deserts, people build houses with thick mud or stone walls. Thick walls warm up slowly, so the inside stays cool even when the sun outside is scorching.

Farmers change the land itself to grow food. On steep hillsides, they cut flat steps called terraces, so soil stays in place and crops have flat ground to grow on. In dry places, farmers dig canals or pipes to carry water from rivers to their fields. This is called irrigation.

*(drawing: Terracing turns a steep hill into flat steps a farmer can plant on.)*

**Tip.** Clothing matches climate too. In hot deserts, people often wear loose, light-colored clothes that let air move and reflect the sun. In many hot countries, people also rest indoors during the hottest part of the midday, then go back to work once it cools down.

**Recap.** People adapt their homes, farms, and daily habits to fit the climate and land where they live.
