# Borders, Territory and the Sea

## Lesson: Why lines on maps cause fights

A sovereign state claims the final say inside its own borders, with no higher power above it. No world government exists to settle every dispute. States sign treaties and join organisations, yet each keeps judging its own interests. That is why border rows can drag on for decades.

The sea is divided by rules as well as coastlines. Further out from shore, a state holds an exclusive economic zone where it controls fishing, drilling, and other economic use. That is why a small rock or island far from the mainland is worth claiming: it anchors rights over a wide ring of ocean.

A river border uses a physical feature people can see, until the river shifts course and strands farms on the wrong side. A grid border uses straight lines of latitude and longitude, which look tidy but can slice through communities and hand whole resources to one side. Neither method is neutral.

**Example.** Take one contested border and list every actor, not just two flags. Each side points to old treaties, maps, history, or the people living there. Courts give opinions and companies want calm trade routes, but no higher power can force sovereign states to accept a verdict they reject.
