## Lesson: What makes a city easy to cross

Density and transport reinforce each other. More people close together can support buses and trains. Good buses and trains let more people live and work close together. Start any verdict with the layout: distances, jobs, stations, and roads explain which trips are easy.

**Example.** Compare two cities by how workers travel. A spread out city with weak buses forces car use, so trips are long and streets clog. A compact city with strong transit keeps car trips low. Put travel data side by side, then look at the layout behind it.

Some planning decisions are hard to undo later. Roads, rail lines, and zoning shape a city for decades. Tearing them up or rebuilding them costs a fortune and displaces people. Choices made before anyone noticed still decide how long residents spend travelling.

**Tip.** Watch what happens when growth outruns services. Crowding, dirty air, and slums without clean water or clinics follow. Buses and trains matter because they move the most people per lane, cutting jams and fumes where cars would clog the streets.
