# Comparing Places

Compare the human and physical geography of one small area with a contrasting area far away (a UK area and one in another country or continent): what is similar, what differs, and how land, weather and daily life go together

## Ready when they can

- Name similarities and differences between their own area and a contrasting place (e.g., 'both have farms, but their houses stand on stilts because of floods')
- Compare physical features of two places (e.g., flat coast vs mountains, hot and dry vs cold and wet)
- Compare how people live in two places (jobs, homes, travel) and link a difference to the land or weather

## Lesson: Comparing places

Every place has land, weather, and people living their lives on it. When you compare two places, look for what is alike, what is different, and how the land and weather explain the differences.

**Example.** Ashfield is a small town in the UK. It has gentle green hills, mild rain most months, and brick houses with chimneys. Many people drive or take the bus to work. Sundarpur is a village on a river delta in Bangladesh. The land is flat, and heavy monsoon rain floods the fields almost every year. Houses stand on tall stilts to stay dry, and families travel by boat when the water rises.

*(drawing: Sundarpur gets far more rainy days each year than Ashfield does.)*

Even though Ashfield and Sundarpur look very different, both places have families, schools, and jobs. The biggest differences come from the land and the weather, not from what people need.

**Tip.** When you compare two places, ask two things: what are the land and weather like, and how do homes, jobs, and travel fit that land and weather?

**Recap.** Two places can share some things, like families and jobs, but land and weather often explain why homes, work, and travel look different.
