## Ready when they can

- Compare the environments and cultures of two world regions (e.g., the Sahel and Scandinavia: climate, farming, cities, traditions)
- Explain how an economic decision shaped a place (e.g., tourism transforming a coastline, mining creating towns)
- Describe how a place shapes identity (e.g., how island life or a megacity shapes how people see themselves)

## Lesson: Comparing regions of the world

Every region on Earth has its own mix of climate, resources, history, and the choices people have made there. When you compare two regions, you're not just listing differences, you're asking why those differences exist.

*(drawing: The Sahel gets far less rain each year than Scandinavia. That one difference in climate helps explain why farming, homes, and daily life look so different in each place.)*

**Example.** In the 1960s, a stretch of Spain's coast was made up of small fishing villages. The government decided to invest in airports and hotels there. Within a few decades, tourism brought millions of visitors a year, and the coastline filled with resort towns. That one economic decision reshaped the land and the kind of work people did.

**Tip.** When you compare two regions, ask four questions: What is the climate like? What resources are nearby? What happened there in the past? What choices have people made? Those four answers explain most of what you see.

**Recap.** Regions differ because of climate, resources, history, and human choices, and those differences shape both the land and how people see themselves.
