## Ready when they can

- Name the seven continents and five oceans
- Point to each continent and ocean on a globe or world map
- Say which continent they live on and place a familiar country on the right continent (e.g., 'Brazil is in South America')

## Lesson: Continents and Oceans: The Big Map of Earth

Earth has huge chunks of land called continents, and huge areas of salty water called oceans. There are seven continents and five oceans in all, and you live on one of those continents right now.

*(drawing: These are the seven continents. Say each name out loud, then find it on a globe.)*

**Tip.** Spin a globe slowly and count each land shape you see. When you have counted seven, you have found every continent.

*(drawing: These are the five oceans. They are the wide blue areas that wrap around the continents.)*

**Example.** Leo looks at a map with his class. He finds his country and sees it sits inside the shape labeled North America. That tells Leo he lives on the continent of North America.

**Recap.** Seven continents are land, five oceans are water, and you can point to your own continent on any map or globe.
