## Lesson: Planning fieldwork that can prove you wrong

Good fieldwork starts with a question that data could settle. Litter on the high street is only a worry until you ask whether it clusters within fifty metres of food shops at lunch. Now you know what to count, where to stand and when, plus what would prove you wrong.

You cannot measure everywhere, so you sample. Random sampling gives every spot a fair chance and dodges your habits. Systematic sampling steps a fixed gap like every tenth metre, which is tidy but can clash with hidden patterns. Stratified sampling splits mixed ground into zones first and samples each.

Choosing is only half the job. You must justify the pick against the alternatives for your site, starting with the words you chose this because. On a patchy riverbank say why zones beat luck, and on a short visit say what fixed steps cost you.

**Tip.** Every method leans, so name two leans and fix each. Counting only on dry days flatters fair weather crowds, safe spots flatter easy ground, and leading questions flatter your hopes. Repeat in rain, randomise stations and pilot the questions.
