# First Maps and Globes

Draw simple maps of familiar places (a bedroom, the route to school) and use maps, globes and photographs to describe places: finding land and water on a globe, spotting buildings and roads in a photo, saying what a place is like

## Ready when they can

- Draw a simple map of a familiar place with key features roughly in the right spots (e.g., their bedroom or the walk to school)
- Point out land and water on a globe or world map
- Use a photograph or map to describe a place's features (e.g., 'this town is by the sea and has a harbour')

## Lesson: Maps and Globes

A map is a drawing of a place from above. It helps you find your way. Put important things roughly where they really are. A map of your walk can show the streets and park you pass.

A globe is a model of Earth shaped like a ball. Turn it to see different sides. Blue usually shows water, such as oceans and seas. Other colours show land.

*(drawing: A sphere is a ball shape, like a globe.)*

**Example.** Mia draws her bedroom map from above. She puts the bed by the window and the toy box by the door, where they really are.

Photos give clues too. If a photo shows boats beside a town, you can say the town has boats. Describe what you can see. Water could be a river, lake or sea.

**Recap.** Maps and globes show real places, like your room or the world.
