# Geographical Fieldwork

Study real places first-hand: observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features of the local area using sketch maps, plans, tallies, graphs, photographs and digital tools

Subject: Geography · Area: People & Environments · Ages 8 to 11

## Ready when they can

- Draw a labelled sketch map or plan of a local area (e.g., mapping the park with its paths, trees and benches)
- Collect fieldwork data with a simple method (e.g., tallying traffic outside school, measuring rainfall over a week)
- Present findings with a graph, annotated photo or map and say what they show

## Lesson: Doing Fieldwork Outside

Geography fieldwork means going outside to study a real place instead of only reading about it. You look closely, measure things, and write down what you find. Then you show your results to other people, using maps, tallies, graphs and photos.

*(drawing: A class tallied vehicles passing the school gate for 10 minutes, then turned the count into a graph.)*

**Example.** Ben visits the park for fieldwork. He draws a sketch map and labels the path, the trees and the bench, then adds a small key so anyone can read it without being there.

**Tip.** Always write the date, the place and a title on your sketch maps and graphs. Then, when you present your findings, anyone can understand what you found and where you found it.

**Recap.** Fieldwork means going outside to observe, measure and record a real place, then presenting what you found with a map, graph or photo.
