# Measuring Development Gaps

Countries differ in income, health and schooling, and each measure tells a different story about the same place. Compare what income per person, life expectancy and years of schooling each capture, and what a national average hides.

## Ready when they can

- Explain what income per person measures and name one thing it misses
- Say why life expectancy and schooling sit alongside income in a development index
- Give an example of a national average hiding a gap inside the country
- Name one reason a development gap can narrow over time

## Lesson: What development numbers hide

When you rank countries, start with income per person: total output divided by headcount. It lets you compare a huge economy with a small one on equal terms. Because prices differ, you also adjust for what money actually buys in each place.

Even adjusted, that average misses plenty. It says nothing about your health, your schooling, how income is shared, unpaid care work, or dirty rivers. That is why life expectancy and years of schooling sit next to income in a development index: they catch what money misses.

**Example.** Picture a country where the capital is rich and the farmlands are poor. One tidy national figure blends both into something middling, and the gap disappears from view. Cutoffs work the same way: an absolute poverty line tracks survival needs like food and shelter, while a relative line compares you with typical living standards nearby.

**Tip.** Poorer economies sometimes grow faster and start to catch up, because copying machines and ideas that already exist beats inventing them. Trade, investment, and better schools can speed the chase. But catch-up is not automatic: conflict, weak schools, and heavy debt can stall it for decades.

**Recap.** Income per person aids fair comparisons, yet averages hide gaps, so read health, schooling, and distribution next to it.
