# Migration and Movement

Why people migrate: push factors (drought, conflict, scarce work) and pull factors (jobs, safety, family); how environments and cultures drive the movement of people, goods and ideas, and how migration changes places

## Ready when they can

- Distinguish push and pull factors with examples (e.g., 'drought pushed farmers out; city jobs pulled them in')
- Describe a real migration and its causes (e.g., people moving from countryside to city for work)
- Explain how migration changes both places (e.g., new foods and festivals arrive; villages lose young workers)

## Lesson: Why People Move

Sometimes a family leaves the only home they have ever known and starts over somewhere new. This is called migration. Two kinds of reasons drive it. A push factor is something bad at home that makes people want to leave, like a drought, a war, or too little work. A pull factor is something good in a new place that draws people there, like a job, safety, or family already living there.

*(drawing: Drought pushes the family out; a city job pulls them in.)*

**Example.** Amara's family had farmed the same land for generations. Then two dry years in a row ruined their crops, and there was no other work nearby. Amara's uncle already had a job at a factory in the city, and he told the family there was work for her father too. The family packed their belongings and moved to the city, where her father started working at the factory within a month.

**Tip.** Migration changes both places. The new place may gain new foods, languages, and skills. The place people leave may lose young workers, and family members who stay behind can feel the change too.

**Recap.** Push factors force people to leave; pull factors draw them somewhere new, and migration changes both places.
