# Turning Field Data Into an Argument

Numbers collected in the field only become geography when they are put in a form that answers the question, and when their limits are stated. A chart that hides the sample size is not an answer.

## Ready when they can

- Choose a graph or map form that fits the data type and defend the choice
- State a conclusion with the uncertainty attached, rather than as a flat fact
- Say what a small or unrepresentative sample lets you claim and what it does not

## Lesson: Making honest arguments from field data

Numbers only become geography when their shape answers your question. Grouped measures like pebble sizes suit histograms, change through the day suits a time series, categories suit bars, and paired numbers hunting a link suit a scatter plot. Always defend why your form fits.

On a scatter plot the dots decide how loudly two things rise together. Tight dots near a line mean a strong link, while a loose cloud means a weak one. Draw the trend only if the cloud earns it, and quote the spread beside the slope.

Two things rising together never proves one caused the other. Ice cream sales and drownings climb together because summer drives both, not because cones sink swimmers. State each conclusion with its doubt attached: the data suggest, in this sample, at this site.

**Tip.** A small or one sided sample is a megaphone for one corner. Ten questionnaires outside one shop cannot speak for a town, and one sunny day cannot speak for a season. A chart that hides its sample size is not an answer. Either narrow your claim to fit the data or widen the data before you widen the claim.
