## Ready when they can

- Name types of communities and how they differ (e.g., 'a city has tall buildings and buses; a village is small and quiet')
- Give examples of how a community uses its environment to meet needs (e.g., farms grow food, ports use the sea)
- Match jobs to community types (e.g., farmer in the countryside, office worker in a city, fisher by the coast)

## Lesson: Types of Communities

A community is people who live near each other. Cities, towns, suburbs, villages and farms are all communities. A city has tall buildings and busy streets. A village is small and quiet, with fields close by.

*(drawing: Count the buildings: 8 tall ones crowd into a city, and 2 small houses sit in a village, with fields all around. That is one way to tell a city and a village apart.)*

**Example.** A farm uses its land to grow food. A port town uses the sea for fish and ships. Mountain villages often raise sheep on grassy hills.

**Example.** In the countryside, many people work as farmers. By the coast, people often work as fishers. In a big city, many people work in offices or shops. In a suburb, people often travel into the city for work.

**Tip.** When you visit a new place, look around. Are there fields, tall buildings, or boats? Those clues tell you what jobs people might do there.

**Recap.** Every community uses its place to meet people's needs.
