# Water, Food and Energy Futures

Three resources decide how liveable a place is, and all three are under pressure from more people, higher incomes and a shifting climate. A shortage can be met by finding more supply or by using less, and the choice is rarely free.

## Lesson: Sharing water, food and energy

More people plus higher incomes raise demand for water, food, and energy all at once. As you grow richer, your diet shifts toward meat and dairy, which need far more water and land per meal. Your energy use climbs too, for homes, transport, and industry.

Stress follows when demand outruns local supply. A region with low rainfall, thirsty farms, and growing cities is a classic case. The planet may hold enough in theory, yet rain falls in the wrong places, and moving bulk water or food is costly, so a global surplus means little to a dry region with no pipes, no cash, or no neighbours willing to share.

**Example.** Take food waste: about a third of food grown never gets eaten, lost in fields, trucks, shops, and kitchens. That waste throws away the water, land, and energy behind it too. Cutting waste is a demand side fix, because the same harvest feeds more mouths, while desalination, new reservoirs, better seeds, and irrigation grow supply.

**Tip.** When you judge any shortage plan, sort it into growing more or wasting less. Meters and pricing, insulation, smaller portions, and rescued surplus all cut demand. And remember that shortages are rarely just natural: a river shared by several countries turns scarcity into diplomacy, and politics picks who gets cut first.
