## Ready when they can

- Describe the extent of Alexander's empire on a map (Greece to Egypt to India)
- Explain that Alexander spread Greek culture and language across the lands he conquered
- Say what the Hellenistic Age was — a blending of Greek and Eastern cultures

## Lesson: Alexander the Great's Empire

You already know Greek soldiers held off huge Persian armies at Marathon and Thermopylae. Decades later, a young king named Alexander did something no one expected. His teacher had been Aristotle, the philosopher who loved studying the world. Alexander became king of Macedon at just twenty years old, then marched east and conquered the Persian Empire himself.

*(drawing: Alexander marched from Greece through Egypt and Persia, all the way to India.)*

**Example.** In Egypt, Alexander founded a new city and named it Alexandria, after himself. He built cities like this across his empire, and Greek settlers, artists, and thinkers lived there side by side with local Egyptian, Persian, and Indian peoples. They brought their language with them. This blending is called the Hellenistic Age. Only after his conquests brought them together could this mixing start.

**Tip.** This blending of Greek and Eastern cultures is called the Hellenistic Age. Greek language and ideas mixed with Egyptian religion, Persian customs, and other traditions, and that mix lasted for centuries after Alexander died.

**Recap.** Alexander conquered an empire from Greece to Egypt to India, and the blending of Greek and Eastern cultures that followed became known as the Hellenistic Age.
