## Ready when they can

- Name two ways a child's life in ancient Greece or Rome was different from today
- Describe what ancient Greek or Roman children might have eaten or worn
- Say that these civilisations existed thousands of years ago — long before grandparents were born

## Lesson: Kids long, long ago

Long, long ago, children lived very differently than you. This was thousands of years ago, in ancient Greece and Rome. That is long before your grandparents were even born.

*(drawing: A Spartan boy's day went like this.)*

Ancient Greek and Roman children ate olives, bread, and grapes. They did not eat pizza or ice cream. They wore tunics and sandals, not jeans and sneakers.

**Example.** Marcus lived in ancient Rome, long ago. He wrote his letters on a wax tablet. He ate bread and olives for lunch. He wore a tunic and sandals to school. Your school day looks very different.

**Tip.** Ancient Greece and Rome were thousands of years ago. That is why children lived so differently then.

**Recap.** Long ago, children ate different foods, wore different clothes, and went to a different kind of school.
