## Ready when they can

- Describe what an illuminated manuscript is and who made them
- Name at least two features of Gothic cathedral architecture (pointed arches, flying buttresses, stained glass)
- Explain how medieval art and buildings were connected to the Church and religious belief

## Lesson: Art and Architecture in the Middle Ages

You already know the Church held huge power over life in the Middle Ages. That power shaped the art people made and the buildings people built. Monks painted glowing pictures inside handwritten books. Builders raised churches so tall they seemed to reach the sky. Almost every painting and every stone tower was made to honor God.

**Example.** Before printing existed, every book had to be copied out by hand. In a quiet monastery, a monk named Brother Aldric spends months copying a single page of the Bible. He paints gold leaf around the first letter and draws tiny animals curling through the margins. A book made this way is called an illuminated manuscript, and monks were the ones who made most of them.

*(drawing: Some Gothic cathedrals took over 100 years to build, so the people who started one never lived to see it finished. That patience shows how much medieval people cared about honoring their faith.)*

Gothic cathedrals look different from the round Roman buildings you already studied. Builders shaped doorways and windows with pointed arches instead of round ones. A pointed arch carries weight better than a round one, so builders added stone supports called flying buttresses to hold up the walls and let the church rise even higher. Between the stone, huge stained glass windows told Bible stories in color, since many people at the time could not read.

**Tip.** Cathedrals and manuscripts were not the only medieval art. Monks also sang plain, flowing songs called Gregorian chant during prayers, and the Bayeux Tapestry stitched an entire story into cloth. Whatever the material, paint, stone, voice, or thread, medieval art almost always pointed back to the Church and to faith.

**Recap.** Medieval art and architecture, from painted manuscripts to soaring cathedrals, were built to honor God and show the Church's power.
