## Ready when they can

- Explain that eligible citizens debated and voted on city decisions in the Athenian Assembly
- Identify voters as free adult male Athenian citizens and name groups excluded from voting
- Explain Athenian democracy's later influence and distinguish direct voting from choosing representatives

## Lesson: Voting for Athens

You have met Athens as a Greek city-state. It developed an early form of democracy, meaning rule by the people. Free adult male citizens met in the Assembly to debate city plans and vote. One king did not decide these questions alone.

**Example.** Imagine a vote about building warships. Citizens gather on a hill called the Pnyx and listen to speakers. Then they vote by raising their hands. For this decision, the side with more votes wins. In our example, six vote for ships and four against. Six is more than four, so the plan wins.

*(drawing: These are example votes, not a record of a real meeting.)*

Only free adult men with Athenian citizenship could vote. Being born in Athens did not by itself give someone citizenship. Women, enslaved people and foreign residents could not vote. Boys were too young. An adult male citizen could vote, but his wife and young son could not.

Athenian democracy influenced later ideas about government. In Athens, eligible citizens voted on city decisions themselves. Today, many democracies have voters choose representatives: people who make government decisions for them. This differs from voting directly on each plan in an Assembly.

**Recap.** Free adult male citizens voted in the Assembly. Many residents were excluded. This early democracy influenced later governments.
