## Lesson: Athens Versus Sparta

After the Roman legend, we return to ancient Greece beside the Mediterranean Sea. Greece had many city-states. A city-state governed a city and nearby land with its own laws and leaders. Mountains separated many communities, helping different states develop. Athens and Sparta were separate city-states.

*(drawing: These were separate governments, not one state under a shared king.)*

Athens was known for learning, plays and debate. Many boys whose families could pay went to school for reading, writing, music and sports. Children had different chances to learn. In Athenian democracy, adult male citizens could debate and vote on city decisions.

Sparta placed great emphasis on military training and discipline. Boys from Spartan citizen families began group training at about seven. They learned to obey orders and prepared for soldier life as adults. Girls exercised too, but did not follow the boys' soldier-training path.

**Example.** Both Athens and Sparta had armies. Athens is remembered for plays and debate as well as soldiers. Sparta is remembered for strict military training. Each city's main focus does not describe everything its people did.

An independent city-state near Sparta could have its own laws. Being nearby did not by itself make it use Sparta's laws. Independence could still be threatened: stronger states sometimes conquered others or tried to control them.

**Recap.** Athens and Sparta had separate governments and focused on different things. Both had armies. Children's education differed between families and groups.
