# Baghdad, Cordoba and the Work of Translation

For several centuries the busiest centres of medicine, astronomy and mathematics were in the Islamic world. Greek works that Europe had lost survived because scholars in Baghdad translated them into Arabic and argued with them.

## Lesson: Baghdad and the Books That Survived

Between about 700 and 1300, the busiest scholars of medicine, star science, and number work lived in the Islamic world. Baghdad sat between Europe and Asia on the Tigris river, and traders carried goods and ideas through it every day.

**Example.** Caliph al-Mamun built up the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, where Muslims, Christians, and Jews worked side by side. Scholars there turned Greek books, such as the works of Aristotle, into Arabic so more readers could argue with them.

Baghdad drew scholars with paid posts, paper workshops, and huge libraries. Cordoba in Spain grew the same way, with shelves of books and streets where many languages mixed. That mix is what let old ideas survive and grow.

**Tip.** When you meet a Greek idea in a later European book, ask how it travelled. Many came west in Arabic copies, through translations made in Baghdad and passed along trade roads.
