# Britain After the War

Out of a bankrupt, bombed country came a health service free at the point of use, mass council housing and an invitation to workers from the Caribbean and south Asia. The Britain most people now live in was largely built between 1945 and 1975.

## Ready when they can

- Name two things the post-war governments built or founded that still exist
- Say why Britain recruited workers from abroad in the 1940s and 1950s
- Describe one way the country looked different in 1975 from 1945

## Lesson: Britain Rebuilt After the War

Britain left the war broke and bombed, with whole streets in ruins. Yet between 1945 and 1975 the country rebuilt itself into the place most people still live in.

**Example.** In 1948 a health service opened that treats all without charge at the door. Councils also raised rows of new homes, so families left slums for flats with light and heat.

Factories lacked hands, so Britain invited workers from the Caribbean and south Asia. Their buses, hospitals, and railways ran because new neighbours drove, nursed, and built.

**Tip.** Compare a street photo from 1945 with one from 1975. New homes, full clinics, and new faces tell the story faster than dates.

**Recap.** A health service, council homes, and workers from abroad rebuilt Britain between 1945 and 1975.
