# Cleopatra and the End of Egypt

Know that ancient Egypt eventually came to an end: the last pharaoh was Cleopatra VII, who allied with Rome but was defeated by Octavian (later Augustus) in 31 BCE, after which Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire — ending over 3,000 years of pharaonic rule and beginning a new chapter in Egypt's history

## Ready when they can

- Name Cleopatra VII as the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt
- Explain that Egypt was conquered by Rome and became part of the Roman Empire
- Understand that the end of pharaonic rule did not mean the end of Egyptian culture

## Lesson: The Last Pharaoh: Cleopatra and Rome

For almost 3,000 years, one pharaoh after another ruled Egypt as a living god. That long story ended with a single ruler: Cleopatra VII, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt.

Cleopatra tried to keep Egypt independent by joining forces with Rome, the powerful empire you already know about. In 31 BCE, a Roman leader named Octavian defeated her forces. Octavian later took a new name, Augustus, and became Rome's first emperor.

*(drawing: The pharaoh era finally ended when Rome won in 31 BCE, and Egypt became Roman Egypt.)*

**Example.** Picture a grain trader working along the Nile in 30 BCE. His whole life, taxes went to the pharaoh, ruler in the name of the gods. Now those taxes go to Rome instead. Egypt has become a province, one part of the huge Roman Empire, run by a Roman governor instead of a pharaoh.

**Tip.** Losing its pharaohs did not mean Egypt lost itself. Temples still stood, people still spoke Egyptian, and the old gods were still honored for centuries under Roman rule.

**Recap.** Cleopatra VII was Egypt's last pharaoh, and when Octavian defeated her in 31 BCE, Egypt became part of the Roman Empire, though Egyptian culture lived on.
