# Daily Life in a Roman Town

Describe daily life in a Roman town — the forum (marketplace and meeting place), public baths, amphitheatre, and villas — and explain that the Romans were brilliant engineers who built straight roads, aqueducts to carry water, underfloor heating (hypocaust), and Hadrian's Wall to mark the empire's northern frontier in Britain

## Lesson: Daily Life in a Roman Town

Roman towns were built to feel busy and important. At the center was the forum, a big square where people shopped, met friends, and heard the latest news. Nearby stood public baths, where people washed, swam, and relaxed together. Many towns also had an amphitheatre, a round building where crowds watched races and shows. Wealthy families lived in villas, houses with painted walls and heated floors.

Romans were brilliant engineers. They built long straight roads so soldiers and traders could travel quickly across the empire. To bring fresh water into towns, they built aqueducts, channels that carried water downhill from springs or rivers. Under some floors, they built a hypocaust, a hidden space where hot air from a furnace warmed the room above. That is how baths and villas stayed warm.

**Example.** Ellie visits Hadrian's Wall with her family. It is a long stone wall that stretches across the north of Britain. A guide tells her that Roman soldiers built it to mark the edge of the empire and watch for people crossing the frontier.

**Tip.** Next time you see a Roman ruin, look for clues: a straight road, a round arena, a channel for water, or a long wall. Each one shows how the Romans solved a real problem.

**Recap.** Roman towns buzzed with life at the forum and baths, while Roman engineers used roads, aqueducts, hypocausts, and Hadrian's Wall to hold their empire together.
